Hino Motors Limited, or more popularly called Hino, is a commercial vehicle manufacturer from Japan. They primarily design and produce trucks, buses, and other vehicles. They are currently headquarted in Hino-shi, Tokyo. They target the Asia market and has been the leading producer of diesel trucks, both medium and heavy-duty.

Their success most probably comes after their affiliation with Toyota, a very famous vehicle brand in the world. Hino is actually a subsidiary of Toyota and is one of the 16 companies held by the Toyota Group.

The company’s roots could be rooted back in 1910 when the Tokyo Gas Industry Company was founded. After many variations, this company was named Diesel Motor Industry Co., Ltd. and the Hino Heavy Industry Company spun itself out from it. During the Second World War, Hino manufactured two armored personnel carries for the Japanese Army.

These carriers are named Type 1 Ho-Ki and Type 1 Ho-Ha half-track. After the world war, Hino stopped manufacturing these large diesel engines and signed the treaty that they will remove the word “heavy” on their company name and concentrate their production on buses, diesel engines, and trailer trucks. From then on, they have already used the name Hino Industry Co. Ltd.

Since Hino wanted to let their consumers know of their main focus which are diesel engines, they decided to add the word ‘diesel’ to their company name. In 1950, they released the TH10, a heavy duty 7-liter DS10 diesel engine. This engine weighs a whopping eight tons and is primarily larger than any Japanese trucks on the market which are marked on the 6-ton limit.

Three years after, Hino decided to try their luck on designing private cars. They started manufacturing the Contessa 900 sedan in 1961 which has an 893cc rear-mounted engine. They also started creating a pickup truck they called the Hino Briska along with this. They used the Contessa’s engine on it but it was slightly enlarged to give more power to the engine.
